Education is very important to every parent. It's well-known that parents worry for their kids when sending them off to school. It's normal, we all want only the best for our kids. You're probably here because you're looking for homes for sale in Orlando, Florida and want to be informed on the local schools in the area. Don't worry, in this post I will talk about a relatively new and promising school that your teenager will surely enjoy attending. Windermere High School is already a top-ranking school in the Orange County area with just one year of operation behind it's belt.
In September 2015, construction on Windermere High School began. It wasn’t until October 2016 that the name Windermere High School was chosen. This was a controversial choice due to the high school not being located in the city of Windermere. At the end of the day, the OCPS School Board approved the name and the Wolverine was decided as the mascot, with navy, bright green, and silver chosen to be the school colors. The school was built as a relief school, due to over-capacity in local schools such as West Orange High School. The school officially opened its doors in August 2017 for the 2017-2018 school year.
The school is located in Lake Butler which is located on the Southwest portion of Orange County. The school serves sections of Lake Butler, Bay Lake, and the Orange County portion of Four Corners. The school itself is built on 66 acres, and has 9 buildings of 340,399 square feet. The school was built in just 18 months, and elements that give the school's architecture a "Key West" vibe, including aluminum shutters, a warm palette color scheme, ship lap form liners to add a horizontal clapboard look to the exterior, and a cistern that gathers rainwater and pumps it into the campus greenhouse.
Windermere High School was constructed by Wharton-Smith. The school consists of classrooms, skill labs, science labs, EHPA gymnasium, vocational labs, media center, administration, guidance, and more support spaces. The auditorium was built to seat 853, has guidance offices, classrooms for band, chorus, orchestra, and piano. Outdoor athletic facilities include a practice football field, track, baseball/softball fields, basketball courts, tennis/volleyball courts, pole vault lane/jump pad, and practice fields. Windermere High is constructed with versatility within the student body in mind. This school has a diverse range of students, coming from all sorts of backgrounds and teachers dedicated to their job. Knowing that your child will be surrounded by like-minded individuals, your homes for sale search should be a bit easier.
Windermere High School's goal vision is "To be the top producer of successful students in the nation." Their mission is to lead their students to success with support and involvement from families and the community. The school's curriculum focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. Students have an opportunity to gain knowledge in a focused area of study by choosing from one of seven pre-majors while exploring other areas through electives. Some of the pre-majors offered are Aerospace Engineering, Digital Design, Liberal Arts, and Performing & Visual Arts, among others. A student with the goal of attending one of the nation’s top universities will choose the University pathway. Other pathways include earning a Valencia AA degree while in high school, earning some college credits and industry certifications to be competitive at most four year universities, or a stronger focus on industry certifications to be ready to enter the workforce right out of high school.
The AICE Cambridge Program is an international pre-university curriculum that prepares students for honors degree programs. The program consists of Cambridge International AS and A Level subjects. A Level is typically a two-year course and counts as a double credit qualification towards the Diploma. AS Level is typically a one-year course and counts as a full (single) credit. Many universities in Florida give credits for passing AS/A Level exams. This is a wonderful program for students seeking higher education and are eager to get extra prep for college.
Windermere High School has an extensive athletics program, as well as many clubs and extra curricular activities for students to take part in. The athletics program includes football/flag football, bowling, cross country, golf, swimming, volleyball, cheerleading, baseball/softball, lacrosse, water polo, tennis, basketball, soccer, weightlifting, and wrestling. In February 2018, Deputy Scott Pine Community Park was opened, housing a stadium for the school's programs. As far as school clubs go, Windermere High has an extensive selection for virtually anyone, including Environmental Club, Drama Club, The Multicultural Club, ASL Club, Choir Club, Table Tennis Club, Battle of the Books, and many more.
For the school's first year, report cards released showed that Windermere High has marks ranking slightly higher than the district and state. This shows that even though Windermere High is a new school, it has a strong academic curriculum that's difficult to match in Orange County and the entire state of Florida. With their first senior class in the 2019 - 2020 school year, Windermere High School shows a lot of promise for continual improvement over time. If you're new to the Orlando area, having trouble finding a good school for your teenager to attend, Windermere High School located in Lake Butler is a great choice.
