Before Windermere became Windermere, the Timucua Indians lived in the town that would one day become the residence to a diverse group of individuals from across the world that we know today. Windermere was established as a residential development in 1889 and chartered in 1925.
It’s believed that Windermere got its name from Dr. Stanley Scott, whose father bought land on the shores of Lake Butler. Dr. Stanley Scott's father named the town Windermere after Lake Windermere in England. Windermere's logo was also inspired by the Town of Windermere, England. The logo is made up of four quarters. The top left quarter shows three Windermere class yachts, which were quite famous at one time. The top right quarter is symbolic of an ancient gate denoting Windermere as the gateway to the Lake District. The bottom left quarter represents the flag of Saint George, the Patron Saint of England. The bottom right quarter represents three char, a rare and delicious species of trout, which are caught in Lake Windermere at a depth of at least 90 feet using gold or gold-plated lures.
The Town of Windmere’s focus is on nature and preserving the land's natural history and beauty. This preservation can be seen in the unpaved roads of downtown, The Butler Chain of Lakes, the 1887 Windermere Schoolhouse and the towns title of “Tree City USA”. Tibet-Butler Nature Preserve is home to the Vera Carter Environmental Center which provides a variety of exhibits and displays. Here you can take hikes and participate in their many environmental programs.
But don’t be fooled by downtown Windermere’s small town community feel, as there are plenty of things to do in Windermere. Every Friday from 9am to 2pm, stop by the Windermere Farmers Market for fresh produce, homemade food and hand crafted items. Take a tour or go fishing on the Butler Chain of Lakes, 13 spring fed lakes that are interconnected by canals and are passable by boat. Windermere also has a couple of great golf courses. One is Isleworth Country Club in the Isleworth neighborhood that’s famous for housing celebrities such as NBA star Shaquille O’Neal and actor Wesley Snipes. The other is The Golden Bear Club at Keene's Point located in the neighborhood of Keene’s Point.
